Privacy policy

BookLessons ("we", "us") is a scheduling service made by Monkey Mountain LLC, Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA. Dance and music teachers use it to publish open lesson times; students use it to book them. This policy explains what we collect, why, and the choices you have. Questions: service@booklessons.app.

What we collect

• Teachers and studios: your name, mobile number (your sign-in), optional email, time zone, lesson times, prices, cancellation rules, places you teach, and the student roster you keep (names, phone numbers, emails, balances) so you can schedule and text your students.
• Students: your name, email (your sign-in), the lessons you book and cancel, and — only if you add it yourself — your mobile number.
• Payments: a credit card kept on file is stored by our payment processor, Stripe; we keep only the card brand, last four digits and expiry. Teacher subscriptions and packages are also billed through Stripe.
• Technical: device push tokens (so the app can alert a teacher of a booking), and ordinary server logs (IP address, time, request) kept for security and troubleshooting.

How we use it

To run the service: showing a teacher's open times, booking and cancelling lessons, sending confirmations, cancellations and reminders, settling balances and cancellation fees, signing you in, and keeping the service secure. We do not sell your information and we do not use it for advertising.

Text messages (SMS)

BookLessons sends two kinds of text message, both from Monkey Mountain LLC's BookLessons messaging number:

• One-time sign-in codes when you sign in to the BookLessons app or verify a mobile number. One message per request.
• Lesson notifications — booking confirmations, cancellations, lesson reminders and studio invitations — only if you opted in: you entered your own mobile number (students under Account → Text messages; teachers under Settings → Account in the app), confirmed it with a one-time code and ticked the "Text me …" box. The box is never pre-ticked. A number that someone else typed in — for example a teacher adding a student to their roster — is never texted by BookLessons; that teacher may text you personally from their own phone.

Frequency: varies with your lesson activity — typically one message per booking, cancellation or reminder; no marketing messages. Message and data rates may apply. Opt out at any time by replying STOP to any message (you will get one confirmation text, then nothing more); reply START to resume, or untick the box in your account. Reply HELP for help, or email service@booklessons.app. Carriers are not liable for delayed or undelivered messages.

No mobile information will be shared with third parties or affiliates for marketing or promotional purposes. Mobile opt-in data and consent are not shared with any third parties. Information sharing to subcontractors in support services, such as customer service, is permitted. All other use case categories exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third parties.

Who we share it with

• Your teacher or studio, and your students — the people you book with see what they need to run the lesson: names, the lesson time and place, price, balance and cancellation records. A student's mobile number is shown to their teacher only when the student or the teacher entered it on that teacher's roster.
• Service providers that process data on our behalf and only for that purpose: Twilio (text messages and sign-in codes), SendGrid (email), Stripe (payments), Expo (app push notifications) and Microsoft Azure (hosting and database, United States).
• Legal — when the law requires it, or to protect the service and its users.

We never sell personal information, and we never share mobile numbers or SMS consent with anyone for their own marketing.

Keeping and deleting your information

You can delete your account at any time — in the app under Settings → Account, or on the web under Account. Your name, mobile number and email are removed at once and the number or email can register again. Records of past lessons, cancellations and balances stay with the teacher or studio they belong to, so that their books balance; they no longer carry your sign-in identity. A teacher may close their account once no lessons are upcoming; their records stay likewise.

Security

Sign-in is by one-time code or emailed link — there are no passwords to steal. Data travels over HTTPS and is stored in Microsoft Azure. Card numbers never touch our servers.

Children

BookLessons is for adults. A lesson for a minor is booked by a parent or guardian, under their own account.
